The town of Gleason is located in the southeast corner of Weakley county, in the northwest section of Tennessee. State Highway 22 passes through the town and Highway 22 Bypass skirts the northern edge of town. Gleason is 119 miles northeast of Memphis, 75 miles east of the Mississippi River, and 125 miles west of Nashville. It is located about midway between Chicago and New Orleans. Gleason was first called Oakwood, deriving this name from an oak tree that came up through a crack in the old post office floor. In 1890, some years before the town was incorporated in 1903, there were 272 residents. The only hotel was built in 1870. Other that the hotel and post office, there was a grocery store owned by a man named Gleason, thus the present name.
