Sharon is located in southwestern Weakley County, 117 northeast of Memphis and 127 miles northwest of Nashville. The city is served by U.S. Highway 45E and State Highway 89. The Norfolk Southern Railroad provides rail service. The area is characterized by rolling land with an average elevation of about 400 feet. Sharon was founded in 1824, although it was not named as such. At this time, the government issued land grants that were sold to people migrating to this area.

In 1873, with a population of 273, the town really got it’s beginning and started to grow when the Illinois Central Railroad bought the right-of-way for its tracks through this settlement. It was during this year that the citizens decided that the community needed a name. The name Sharon was chosen because the first train through the town had as its engineer a man named Sharon.
